âI hate you,â Kreya heard Zera say.
Eyes still closed, Kreya smiled.
âHah, youâre awake. Knew it.â Raising her voice, Zera called, âJentt, sheâs awake! Just faking it now to mess with us.â Her voice sounded brittle.
Squinting, Kreya tried to open her eyes. Sunlight stabbed them, and she closed them again. Sheâd seen enough to know a figure loomed over her, probably Zera, which meant she wasnât dead. âIt worked,â Kreya croaked.
âIf you mean you almost killed yourself, then yes, it worked.â
âYouâre alive.â
âI know Iâm supposed to say thank you,â Zera said, âbut Iâm too pissed at you. There was no guarantee youâd survive the venom a second time. You were unconscious for days. Again. Idiot. Selfish, stubborn idiot.â
Her hand didnât hurt, she noticed. Someone must have stitched up her wound and bound it properly. Her body felt like it had been flattened with an enormous rolling pin, but she could feel it, which had to be a good sign. âYouâre welcome.â
She heard footsteps nearby and cracked her eyes open again. Zera was beside her, in a chair, and Jentt now filled the doorway. She managed a smile at him. âAre you going to yell at me too?â She was aware the question sounded pathetic.
âNo,â he said.
But he didnât come closer than the doorway.
âYouâre angry.â It wasnât a guess. It was an obvious fact. âIâm sorry I risked myself, but Zera was on the brink of death, and I knewââ
âYou didnât even wake me. Much less talk to me first.â
That was true. But sheâd been afraid of what heâd say, that heâd try to talk her out of it. Not talking it over first allowed her to be brave. âI thought youâd tell me not to do it.â
âI could have helped you,â he said. âInstead I woke to you bleeding and unconscious. And missingââ He sucked in air as if trying to compose himself. âYou used my knife, and you didnât wake me. Weâre supposed to be a team, Kreya. All of us, remember?â
She closed her eyes, not wanting to see the pain in his face.
âI know youâve been on your own for a long time, but Iâm here nowââ
âAnd that means I could lose you again.â She opened her eyes, looked at Jentt, and then looked at Zera. âI could lose all of you. Nearly did. I canât bear that.â
âAnd what if we lost you?â
âIââ
Amazingly, it wasnât something sheâd ever thought about.
Zera patted her hand, the one that still had all five fingers. âI love you too, idiot.â Leaning over, she kissed Kreyaâs forehead. âGet some more rest.â
She left the room, and Jentt stepped back to allow her to pass. He lingered in the doorway for a while, looking as if he had more to say but pressing his lips together so he wouldnât say it.
Exhaustion pulled on all of her muscles like a heavy weight. âDo you forgive me?â
He was silent for a moment. âNo.â
Fine. She deserved that. âWill you forgive me?â
This time, he didnât hesitate. âYes.â
Good enough.
